B.C. loses salmon farm jurisdiction

The B.C. Supreme Court ruled Monday the federal government — not the province — has exclusive jurisdiction over the management of salmon farming, a landmark decision hailed as a victory for the future of wild stocks.

“The regulation of fish farming by the province is ultra vires, beyond its power,” said a triumphant Greg McDade, the lawyer who pursued the case on behalf of independent sea-lice researcher Alexandra Morton and others.

The appointment would represent a major and early victory for environmentalists

After an 8 year assault on clean water, clear skies, healthy forests and endangered species, the President elect makes an early environmental statement. Now if they could only keep the lame ducks from implementing their new proposed assault on the environmental protections.

On Wednesday, Politico reported that Obama was strongly considering putting Rober F. Kennedy Jr. at the head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Landmark Fish Habitat Bill Introduced In U.S. Senate

On September 24th Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Christopher Bond (R-MO), Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), and George Voinovich (R-OH), introduced the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act of 2008, a comprehensive strategy to allocate conservation dollars for effective restoration of our national waterways

The National Fish Habitat Action Plan is a national investment strategy to maximize the impact of conservation dollars on the ground. Under the Action Plan, Federal, state and privately-raised funds will be the foundation for building regional partnerships that address the Nation’s biggest fish habitat problems. This is the most comprehensive effort ever attempted to the causes of fish habitat decline, not just the symptoms.

SENATOR MCCAIN: Oh, I fish all the time. I fish for catfish. I fish for bass. I fish for bluegill that all are on our property and in Oak Creek, which is our property up in northern Arizona. It's on Oak Creek. Also, there is a fish hatchery that's down from us--not on the property--obviously the state fish hatchery, trout, but I have to admit to you I've never caught one of their trout. Maybe they've never put them into the creek near our home.

The owner of the private  Spring Ridge club has secured some leases in neighboring Ohio and the locals are not happy about it. Glossy ads for the Spring Ridge Club can be seen in some of your favorite mainstream fly fish rags.

"If we can't stop it, we can certainly make it unpalatable," said Kevin Kayle, aquatic biology supervisor for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, when he learned that Beaver was in the process of leasing two properties on Conneaut Creek for his Spring Ridge Club late last year. Stocking fish in the North Cascades?

With the stocking program on the Batten Kill resolved, well almost, we turn out attention to local waters.

A bill has been introduced to allow volunteers and the WDOF to continue stocking lakes in North Cascades National Park. The bill was filed to head off the possibility that the park may follow the lead of other national parks and discontinue the practice. The article has a link to the history of the fish stocking controversy and it's impact on the debate today.

Volunteer fishing groups such as the Hi-Lakers and Trail Blazers support the continued practice, while the North Cascades Conservation Council believes the lakes should return to their fish-free state.

Alaska's other U.S. senator, Ted Stevens, and Gov. Frank Murkowski co-hosted this year's event. It drew about 200 people, many of them lobbyists and executives from major U.S. industries.
