2009 AMFF Annual Dinner at the New York Anglers' Club

As you probably already know, rumor has it Darth Cheney accepted an invitation to appear at the American Museum of Fly Fishing annual dinner. While most are reporting on the outrage that is justifiably being directed at museum officials, we're reporting the following.....

No mention of Dick being part of the program however.

Executive Director of the American Museum of Fly Fishing, Catherine Comar, said the museum would not comment on whether Cheney would be the guest of honor and speaker at the dinner, nor would she confirm or deny rumors that the invitation or event may be postponed until the fall.  LINK  (Via: The Manchester Journal)

Fly Fishing Film Tour Launch is Urinal Cake Free

The 2009 Fly Fishing Film Tour officially launched in Colorado Springs last Thursday, Patagonia man on the scene Matty O.  filed this report.

The Fly Fishing Film Tour got off to a good start last night with the event benefiting Project Healing Waters down in Colorado Springs. Good attendance - probably 250 folks - and a classic new-school blue grass band called Grass It Up. They did some hilarious covers of Prince and KC & the Sunshine Band - a good time had by all.

The film selections were quite good and everyone left stoked to get on the water. The venue was a lot different than expected but the owners donated the space which you can’t beat. A couple photos for you (the urinal shot is a just a little reminder that Fenway and Gill Stadium are not the only places on earth with such fine receptacles!)… I'll have a full post on RMPFF soon.

Rain Coast beatdown

Smolt and Rathbun just got back from the annual post Bellevue fly show boondoggle.  We took everything Mother Nature threw and with the help of Raincoast Guides Jim Kerr, we had another ridiculously good time.

It started out unseasonably delicious.

 

   

 

Jim Kerr - the Olympic Peninsula's premier source of fishingenuity and the most entertaining drift jockey we know.  Note to self - never swig whiskey during a Kerr'ism.  It's not nearly as smooth when it shoots out your nose.

 

Before surrender, this dime induced a pleasant 100 yard shuffle up the MIDDLE of the Duc.

 

Which inspired some flask attention.

  

Just in time to prepare us for a climactic slap to the face.

Take action to protect BC's coast from oil spills

For 37 years the northern coastal waters of British Columbia have been protected from oil tanker traffic. This ban is now under threat. Plans to build pipelines and a supertanker port in BC to service the Alberta Tar Sands are moving forward with support from the BC and Canadian Governments. LINK

Dogwood Initiative is distributing 200,000 removable decals. These decals can be applied to most smooth surfaces including plastic, glass and metal. Once applied, each decal will help spread the word about oil spills from proposed Tar Sands Tankers on the coast of BC's Great Bear Rainforest. LINK

The Fly Shop is excited to announce that we will again be hosting Dec Hogan’s Spey Casting and Fishing Clinics on the Sacramento River in Redding in April.

Each daily clinic is held on-the-water on the Sacramento River near Redding, and will be split into a morning and an afternoon session, with lunch provided in between. The morning session will focus on the fundamentals of two-handed casting techniques, while the afternoon session is dedicated to actual fishing applications that anglers encounter when fishing with Spey rods. This is a great opportunity for any student of spey casting, or anglers interested in targeting steelhead, sea-trout, or Atlantic Salmon on the fly, to learn from one of the true masters of fly fishing with the two-handed rod.

The cost for the full-day casting and fishing clinic is $250 per person, which includes lunch. The clinics will be held on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5. There will be a maximum of 6 rods per class, so sign up now to guarantee yourself a spot.

South Park Fly Fishers

Established in 2003 by the Park County Tourism Office and local ranchers, the goal of this not-for-profit program is to develop and maintain public recreation opportunities on private lands. With a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) South Park Fly Fishers have secured several fly-fishing leases on private ranches in South Park. The majority of each rod fee goes directly to the participating rancher. The balance is used to maintain and improve each property and the program.

I'll have the Chilean farm raised salmon with a side of pesticides

Reason number 1,476 not to eat farm raised salmon.

The Pew Environment Group recently acquired documents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealing that three Chilean salmon farming companies, including the two largest producers of farmed salmon, used a number of drugs not approved by the U.S. government.  These chemicals include the antibiotics flumequine and oxolinic acid and the pesticide emamectin benzoate. The documents further show that the farmed salmon containing  residues of unapproved chemicals were destined for the U.S. market.

Chile is the primary source of farmed salmon consumed in the United States. LINK

In November 2007, artist Matthew Groves received an order for prints of the Atlantic Salmon and Sockeye Salmon, from Rob Vitek of New Mexico, USA, with an unusual request. He wished to use the images for a Tattoo on his back.

B.C. loses salmon farm jurisdiction

Alexandra Morton kicks ass.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruled Monday the federal government — not the province — has exclusive jurisdiction over the management of salmon farming, a landmark decision hailed as a victory for the future of wild stocks.

“The regulation of fish farming by the province is ultra vires, beyond its power,” said a triumphant Greg McDade, the lawyer who pursued the case on behalf of independent sea-lice researcher Alexandra Morton and others.

Scientists turn beer waste into fish food

An unlikely alliance between two former Colorado School of Mines students and the New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins could someday end up saving fisheries all over the world.

"A large facility, a large brewery for example, might put 40 to 50,000 pounds of waste beer down their drain every day. So we can convert that to 30 to 35,000 pounds of bacterial protein everyday. Regular fish feed has 25 to 50 percent protein. Our ingredient has 65 percent protein."  LINK (Via: 9News)

Guaranteed to catch a steelhead on the fly?

Now it's possible.  Just got this note from good friend and incredible Olympic Peninsula Steelhead Guide, Jim Kerr. 

My good friend and fellow fishing guide Sam Kennedy has been very sick with cancer for some time, and despite good health insurance it has predictably put his family on the ropes financially.  There is a benefit dinner for him here in Forks on the 7th and lots of guides including myself have offered to donate trips for auction. I have decided instead of donating a trip I will be donating a fly caught steelhead, no matter how many trips it takes, whether or not you have ever cast a fly rod before, post your bid on the blog and if you are the highest bidder I will take you fishing until you hook and land a fresh run adult steelhead.

The details are simple, book the day you want, if you don’t land a steelhead, we will book another day and so on.  If there are two of you well then, we will have to get you each one.
